Flipboard Case Study

Flipboard

Flipboard allows you to discover quality content personalized for you based on your passions and interests. You can save stories to create your own magazine, or you can read collections of hand-picked stories by editors in Curated Packages (now known as “Storyboards”).

Increasing Shares of Curated Packages

Curated Packages (now known as “Storyboards”) are collections of hand-picked stories by Flipboard editors or publishers.

The goals of this project were to have
1) More unique users tapping the “Share” button (not just the same person sharing multiple times) and
2) More users actually sharing Curated Packages

Several different designs were tested in experiments with users, resulting in a 14% increase in shares and the design was shipped on iOS and Android.

Usability Testing

Coordinated with process owners to understand what insights we want to gain. Then designed script, ran tests, and analyzed results to share with members of the Product, Engineering, and Design teams.

Some tests that I ran were to understand:

  • Issues during user onboarding

  • Discoverability of and feedback on curated packages

  • Whether users use social action icons in the app and if interactions are in line with their expectations

  • Whether users would follow publishers and what they expect to do and see while on publisher profiles

  • What users would call curated packages and what they think about some of our alternative names

Personas

Synthesized existing research to create personas. These were then shared within the company to align members of the target audience to help drive the product roadmap.
